Jim finds joy in creativity through color, texture, value, and design. Even while busy with a career in medicine, he made time to explore photography, sculpture, and printmaking.

In 1995, Jim decided to pursue his interest in watercolor painting more seriously. While practicing medicine and raising a family, he studied with a variety of teachers. To further improve his skills, he invited friends who were accomplished painters to join him in painting outdoors.

“The act of getting outside and painting from nature is, traditionally—and in my case—an amazing way to improve your painting. What you see outdoors can be overwhelming. You really have to learn how to edit it and determine what is important and what isn’t.”

Jim encourages his watercolor students to paint outside, even if it feels a bit intimidating. “The light and color are far more impressive in person than in a photograph. So get outside and paint from life. You may not create great paintings every time, but with every stroke, you learn.”

Now retired, Jim is able to paint more consistently and participates in several plein air events, where he has won multiple awards, including Best in Show. He is a signature member of the Minnesota Watercolor Society and has received numerous awards for his work.
