MNWS is thrilled to welcome Sonja Hutchinson as our September demo artist!

Sonja is a Signature Member and Past President of the Minnesota Watercolor Society and a Signature Member of the Red River Watercolor Society. Her work has received numerous awards in local and national juried shows. She teaches watercolor painting at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts, the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, Hopkins Center for the Arts and holds workshops for organizations and clubs by special request.

It was an aha moment when Sonja decided to ‘break the rules’ with masking fluid in her watercolors. In her study of watercolor, masking was to be used only to save the smallest, brightest whites and was often frowned upon for the hard edges it left behind. Then one day she had the impulse to make big marks, to let it rip so to speak. It was an untamed moment and the “Ice Princess” was born.

This led to further exploration and she was excited by the energy this brought to her paintings.  She has used this technique with a variety of subjects, including completely intuitive works.

Over time, Sonja has used her gestural technique to animate people, animals and objects. Her demo subject “The Critic” is a juxtaposition of raw energetic edges with an unflappable demeanor.
