Jeannie McGuire, a Pittsburgh-based watercolor artist, strives to invoke individual interpretation through her artwork, which impressively utilizes a free application of paint and stylistic forms of expression. McGuire uses her own photography, acquired snapshots and life drawings to spark her creativity, as well as story and character observations. Her work has been described as a brilliant combination of emotion, movement, and artistry. Impressionistic in nature with an identifiable subject, her strong, figurative approaches are unique in more ways than one. Her work was awarded the American Watercolor Society’s 144th Gold Medal of Honor, is widely exhibited internationally, and featured in numerous art publications—most recently, International Artist Magazine, 2018.
Minnesota Watercolor Society and the Minnetonka Center for the Arts will co-host Jeannie McGuire’s Figurative Design workshop featuring her unique projects and experimental approach. You’ll be invited to: imagine a story, character and persona of people in reference photos; find a signature style; strengthen drawing and painting skills; discover the freedom of an intuitive approach to create memorable paintings. You’ll explore: the interplay between figurative subject(s) and backgrounds, natural design in reference materials, cropping impact, pigment maintenance, high ratio of pigment to water, intentional and spontaneous marks, use of titanium white, and the freedom to change your mind. Each day begins with a project-specific demo such as: unconventional exploration of eyes and faces; single-figure focus with nonspecific background; integrating figurative grouping with background elements. Artists receive lots of personal attention and plenty of painting time.
About the Workshop:
Paintings of people are compelling because of the abundance of stories to be told. In Jeannie’s Figurative Design Workshops she aims to act as a mentor and to inspire artists to create original works of art in their own unique style. Jeannie shares her painting application and spontaneous thoughts and stories that guide her process. You will hear about intuitive design and composition, versatility of pigment/water ratios, intentional and spontaneous marks, use of titanium white as an additional pigment, and the freedom to change your mind. You will be encouraged to work in a series of 2 plus paintings of a like genre. Be imaginative about the people in your reference photos by studying their expressions, body language, surroundings and interactions.
Students will gather together as a class each morning for an introduction into designing for a story. Projects will be presented to stimulate thought. Jeannie will give individual mentoring to each student through conversation or pencil to paper while suggesting design adjustments and story ideas. There will be class demonstrations, spontaneous conversation and independent painting time. Artists are to bring their own references. (Note - Drawings may be started ahead of time but might need altered or redrawn once you hear about the project).
