The Minnesota Watercolor Society is excited to welcome Kar-Keat Chong as our May demo artist! Kar-Keat Chong will be demonstrating Plein Air Sketching and Watercolor.
Kar-Keat was born and raised in the tropical city of George Town, Penang, Malaysia. He came to the U.S. in 1995 to pursue undergraduate studies and was able to make use of his creative abilities in different avenues such as rendering and designing built environments. After graduating, he worked in award-winning architecture firms, before pursuing a Master’s degree in Architecture at the University of Minnesota. Today, he runs his own art and architecture studio.
In 2017, Kar-Keat decided to make time for his childhood passion again by conducting plein air painting sessions on his own and joining regular sketch outings hosted by the Urban Sketchers Twin Cities Chapter.
Kar-Keat's work has a realistic quality, with bold confident strokes in some scenes, as well as soft, more delicate lines in others. As a storyteller, he's hoping to share glimpses of other cultures and parts of the world through art.
